Testing in Ex (Explosive) Atmosphere

The Institute for Protection and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska also conducts testing of electrical systems in explosive atmospheres (Ex atmosphere). We hold the authorization issued by the Ministry of Labor and Veterans' Protection of the Republic of Srpska, which is:

  • A license for performing occupational safety tasks in spaces exposed to explosive atmospheres:
    • A legal entity can manage occupational safety tasks for an employer in areas exposed to explosive atmospheres,
    • Provides training for employees for safe work in terms of occupational safety, who work or stay in areas exposed to explosive atmospheres,
    • Prepares risk assessment documents for employers in areas exposed to explosive atmospheres, and
    • Conducts preventive and periodic inspections and testing of work equipment and workplace conditions in terms of occupational safety in areas exposed to explosive atmospheres.

Testing electrical systems in explosive atmospheres (Ex atmosphere) is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of equipment used in such environments. Explosive atmospheres commonly occur in industries such as petrochemicals, mining, pharmaceuticals, and the food industry, where the presence of flammable gases, vapors, or dust may occur.

Key characteristics and procedures for testing in Ex atmosphere are:

  • Installation verification: The inspection of electrical installations must include a detailed review of protective barriers, proper installation, and maintenance of equipment to prevent spark generation or excessive heat.
  • Grounding testing: Grounding systems must be regularly checked to ensure they effectively prevent the accumulation of static electricity, which could cause an explosion.
  • Thermographic testing: Using thermographic cameras, hot spots and overheating equipment issues can be identified, which is crucial for preventing potential incidents.
  • Protection system verification: All protective systems, including switches and relays, must be tested to ensure they function properly in Ex atmosphere conditions.
  • Documentation and reporting: Detailed documentation of all testing is mandatory to ensure that all aspects of testing are recorded and that all technical regulations and laws are met.

Why are tests in Ex atmosphere important?

  • Risk reduction: Regular testing helps identify potential hazards and prevent accidents, protecting human life and property.
  • Compliance with regulations: Adhering to standards and regulations is crucial for obtaining necessary permits and can reduce legal risks.
  • Asset preservation: Regular maintenance of electrical power systems reduces repair and downtime costs.

Testing electrical power systems in explosive atmospheres is crucial for achieving safety, efficiency, and reliability. Regular maintenance and testing contribute to reducing the risk of incidents, ensuring a safe working environment.
